Why move to Honduras?

 

Honduras is a country where dreams CAN come true.  Let me explain. In 1975 after my husband graduated college we moved to Honduras as we had planned to do for many years. He was born and raised in Tegucigalpa and loved his home country. We had hopes and dreams of being able to make a difference there, but things did not go according to our plans, and after 10 months we made the decision to move back to the US.  We left vowing NEVER to return to Honduras…and we didn’t for over 29 years!  In the US it had been a constant struggle to survive and as we  neared retirement age we needed to look at other options.  In 2005 we decided to go back and visit the family in Tegucigalpa.  We had a wonderful time but did not get outside of the areas closely surrounding Tegucigalpa.  In a subsequent trip we decided to return to Honduras again and visit a part of the country my husband had never been to…Copan.  What can I say, it was love at first sight! 

 

We found that Honduras was not only a place of great natural beauty, with some of the most beautiful mountains we have ever seen, but property prices are reasonable, the cost of living is low, health care is highly rated and inexpensive, and the crime rate is low.  The democratically elected government remains unaffected by the internal strife some neighboring countries have experienced in the last few decades.  Natural beauty surrounds you at every turn and Honduras also has the rich history of the  just about the best-preserved Mayan ruins in the world.  Natural beauty surrounds you at every turn.  Honduras’ beauty springs from a varied landscape and the coast has a backdrop of high-country mountains and cloud forests that slope down into lush valleys.  There is abundant water with brooks, springs and rivers everywhere.  There are large expanses of land where coffee, tobacco, fruits, vegetables, decorative plants and many other items flourish.

 

This new-found love for my husband’s home country prompted us to buy property and begin plans to build a Spanish-style villa, a bed and breakfast, botanical garden and nursery.   We discovered that by selling our $625,000 Hawaiian home we could do anything we wanted in Copan and live the rest of our life at a slower, happier pace.  We felt we would finally be able to give something special back to my husband’s homeland.
